I am probably giving the impression that growing up for an otter means learning to fish in deeper ponds and eventually the river and learning to kill and devour bigger and bigger fish. If otters, like so many folks in the Thousand Islands, went to Florida for the winter, I would say that is the case. However, the otters stay and for the most part spend the winter in the beaver ponds which generally lose water in the winter. Learning to fish in deep water is important, but so is this demonstration an otter mom gave in August -- "fishing" through the mud. Turn the page to see that: page24
